Spend $4-500 and get a GPS with a depth sounder. I understand that you can get free charts for US waters quite easily. This gives you speed, charts and depth. Looking up to see your wind vane isnt that problematic even though it doesnt give you wind speed. We installed a Lowrance Gps system this year for about $500 and it works great. It included West coast charts from Alaska to Mexico. If you are a weekend or day sailor this is all you need.
