Ericson 27

Looking at an 1979 Ericson 27 with an 8 hp Yanmar diesel. Based on looking at other Ericson 27's for sale online they all have higher hp engines. The brochure for 1975 E-27 specifies a Atomic 4, 30 HP. Most of the higher hp engines I see online are gas. Is the one I'm looking at with the 8 hp underpowered? The marina manager where the boat is located says that the diesel has a lot more low end torque and that is what you need to better drive the boat. I'm just wondering, aren't hp numbers directly comparable without this issue of torque involved? Thanks for any help you can be.

Check with the group at Ericsonyachts.org I have a Vetus 2 cylinder in my e27, I think it is 16 hp, drives the boat plenty strong, hull speed I think. And yes torque and hp are very diferent...

It may become something of a moot point - the boat sails so well, you'll only use the engine to get in or out of your slip. The rest of the time, you'll be sailing. (We had a 1975 Ericson 27 and LOVED it)

Shameless self-promotion - my blog for the Annapolis Capital newspaper is moving to a new location:

tommays will become famous soon enough
It will move the boat BUT if you have not been on a boat with one cylinder diesel you should try one first as they are not what I would consider smooth

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat
