Southampton Boat Show 2011
Having just returned from my annual boat porn weekend i would like to share a few thoughts.
For those of you who have not been, the Southampton boat show is the largest of its kind in the UK.
Amongst all the millions of pounds /dollars worth of ' gin palaces' was a stunningly beautiful Contessa 32.
This yacht put all the Oysters, Bennetau and etc to shame.
The quality of the build, the faultless workmanship and the innovative design ideas put a new lease of life into a well respected and tested class.
I promise i dont work for the boatyard involved.
In stark contrast the so called cream of the yachting world were a great disappointment.
We boarded a Bennetau that was poorly finished with delamination of the internal veneers around the bulkheads. Remember this is on a brand new boat at a prestigious show. The saloon table wobbled (not good for wedging yourself against in a seaway) and the general finish looked cheap.
The same story with many of the other leading brands. A 'J boat' daysailer was so poorly finished that even the girl who was 'hostessing' agreed that it was in poor shape. Again, a brand new boat.
As we went from yacht to yacht the only ones that stood out were the Oysters and the Discoveries and boy do you pay for the priveledge!!
For us, the glowing gem that stole the show, was the Contessa.
Now, if anyone has a spare £160,000 lying around they don't need…
