Do you need the raymarine smartpilot control head?

Another novice question from me....

You can buy the Smartpilot X-5 core pack without the control head...but it isn't clear to me from my research whether you can opeate it without the control head. Is it essential..is it indeed useful?

The control head provides the input interface to the smart pilot so it is necessary unless chart plotter serves that role.
