Need Help With Gunwale On An Older 420

I am going to restore an older 420 and I am not sure what the holes are for on the port and starboard gunwales. I have never used a trapeze before and I am guessing they are for that. I intend to replace the wood trim on the gunwales but I need to find the purpose for the holes and cutaway on the trim bumper. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
