Build your own offshore boat? Suitable starting platform?

I remember when I first got bit by the the sailing bug that I was searching through yacht world and came across a 40' Morgan. It was completely gutted with every system fully exposed. Very sparse and all about business. The seller had sailed across the Atlantic multiple times and purpose built the Morgan to do the same.

My question is what builders didn't use liners in there boats? What boat would be suited to doing this type of thing?

It was really impressive, there was no nook that couldn't be addressed, no bolt or nut that couldn't be accessed. No wiring tucked away, but neatly run and organized. This is the type of cruising boat that appeals to me.

After re-reading this it sounds vague. To expound, I'm thinking along the lines of a cheap yard boat that you see plenty of. A good sailing vessel with a well designed hull. Production boat, you might say... A few come to mind, obviously morgan - but which ones? Alberg 30, Are Albin Vegas lined? etc...

It is not just about liner or not. My Bristol 45.5 does not have a liner (deck or hull) but is relatively tougher to work on than my previous Niagara 35 that did have liners but also careful construction so you could get at everything. For example, in the Niagara you could remove the tanks with no disassembly of the boat needed. There were hatches made large enough to allow this. On the Bristol, tanks (and wiring) were placed and then the interior was built, stick-by-stick on top of the systems. Removing a tank involves considerable disassembly of the furniture and/or cabin sole and its supports.

I agree, you can look at interior pics of my boat. There is access to anything, and everything, because the boat pretty much disassembles........i2f

That's what bothers me, the boat being built around the parts. That's not logical, to me any ways. I understand why it's done. The liner, to me, becomes a problem if the boat is holed.

Where ever my boat is holed. Several screws out, and there is access. I don't sail a productuin boat. It's cold molded, and builr in conjunction with Schmidt Boatyard in Berlin, and the owner an engineer himself. I also carry an axe if need be. If sailing something where all the plumbing, and wiring is visible is your thing. Then have at it. We all get through life differntly. I am only pointing it doesn't have to be difficult to have access to every part of the boat. Production boats, mostly, are built for cost limits......i2f

Oh, that sounds fine... I guess I was just trying to get a feel for what is acceptable and not. For instance, there are huge access holes cut in my boat through the liner that the PO's have done to perform maintenance. Some so large a man can crawl through. My next boat will not have a liner for sure...

I am a gear head so you are right, I probably prefer the mechanical look over aesthetics.

I've been a wrench for over 3 decades. Custom exhaust on Rolls, Ferraris, and things we have never heard of. 55 Chrysler Ghia, looks like a Karmin Ghia only the size of a 55 Chrysler. Some movie vehicles as Tucker, and the coupe out of. The 50's movie wiith Harrison Ford? So I understand gearhead, but I do like a slick finish......i2f

Nice! I could've been a mechanic, probably have been in a another life. But I chose IT work. Which i'm getting burned out on very quickly! I've built motors for a couple cars and wasted alot of money on that hobby! Here's one that went in my 65 Beetle.
