A lot of this depends on the design of the boat, but generally the mast is stepped slightly further forward on boat and is substantially taller than a similar sail area masthead
rig.
Fractional
rigs behave very different than masthead
rigs. They generally allow very precise powering up and down. They require fewer and smaller headsails and so are easier to sail and are less expensive to maintain.
