Huntington Harbor, NY - safe?

Does anyone know how well-protected is
Huntington Harbor in Long Island Sound? Is it generally a harbor on the safer side as far as winds are concerned? It looks very crowded.

I am trying to decide to moore there or move to Oyster Bay during a predicted 35 knot wind with 50 knot gales. Would you advise to stay on a mooring or on a dock? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks. Just mooring at the Huntington Yacht Club for a few days and then putting her on the hard in City Island.

Where are you now? You'll have to move fast. You also hopefully know your current mooring and how long it's been there and how solid it is. It may be wiser to secure your rigging, remove your sails, and strap everything down where you are now, before it hits.

I'm on the mooring now, it's a 500 lbs mooring with a single line. My Tartan 34C has 13000 lbs displacement. According to the dockmaster it should be safe and the harbor is suppossed to be well-protected. He has no concern. What do you think?

Should I throw a line over the main? What about the roller-furling jib?

just sail there tuesday winds were north west 15 to 30 well protected. I prefer a mooring, good luck its a noth easter today

The weather I heard talked about gusts to 60 (mph, not knots) so wrapping the spinnaker or other jib halyards in opposing directions (clockwise & counterclockwise) around the r/f jib and tying them off would probably be a good idea. Wrapping the mainsail & cover with lines or sailties would be a good idea too, if you can't get the sail off. Snowing now. Half an inch on the ground in CT.
