Florence Arthaud is one of the best known French sailors and a dam good one. She had won the 1990 Route du Rhum single-handed transatlantic sailing race, the most important Transat and I do not mean among the ladies

Yesterday she feel on the water while sailing solo (at night) and was rescued by its mobil phone. She feel overboard while taking a piss ( I thought that only men do that on the outside).

Florence Arthaud fell off her boat during a toilet break but was saved from the Mediterranean waters by rescuers after she called her mother by mobile phone.

Article says the cell was in a waterproof bag. Obviously, she was within a few miles of shore. Still a nice save.

Yes, complacency lesson and from one sailor that is a lot better than any of us.

You guys probably don't know, but just some weeks before the Mini transat that had just finished one of the sailors that was to participate fell of his boat and died. He was not far from land, just some miles and probably if he was racing on the middle of Atlantic that would not have happened because he would take precautions that probably he didn't take because he was not racing and was near land.

About the mobile phone one of the French articles says that it was an waterproof model that she had just bought days before she went sailing.

I was going to say there are some waterproof, fall proof, crushproof cell phones one can get, if she had one of them, as it appeared she did, then one can get wet and make calls. I dunk my phone in glass's of water frequently as most people say a phone can not get wet and survive! It did not handle 5 days of salt water under my boat in 10-20' depending upon the tide........batter still worked on replacement phone, but the rest of the innards were shot! My camera is a waterproof design, good to 10M underwater "taking" pics no less. When and if you are an outdoor person, waterproof/resistant electronics come in handy. Granted sometimes the innards are yesterdays electronics, but if they get wet and work, better than the best electronics that can not get wet and die on you when you need it!

I imagine the call went something like this...

That mobile phone saved her life in two different ways: Allow her to ask for help and the incorporated GPS was indispensable to find her at night. She had a small head lamp but they would never found her without the GPS.
