New Engine Installation

I have a Kittiwake 23, an Alberg design. It is set up for an outboard for auxilary power. There is enough room to install an inboard Yanmar diesel. However, since it''s a full keel I''m wondering how to go about finding out how to make the modifications for the shaft and prop.

Does anyone have any ideas of suggestions? Telling me I''m crazy won''t help, my wife has already made that assessment.

Space for a mounting and a shaft can become a problem in a small boat. Have you concidered going to a saildrive unit? In my Lancer 29 I have the same problem not enough space for a standard aux. I will include two types both would work well in a boat the size of yours..

I''ll agree with your First Mate and try to discourage you. Full-keel boats generally have an aperture in front of the rudder. Will you have to cut out the keel for the prop? Then you will have to drill a very long hole from the aperture at the correct angle in line with the transmission. But how will you know until the engine/tranny dimensions and mounting location is determined? Now you have to design in a stuffing box on one end and a way to mount a cutlass bearing on the other. This does not begin to address issues of batteries, fuel systems, and wiring. And you have just weighed down a good sailboat and lost a bunch of storage. Trade the boat, don''t ruin it.

You are right the full keel makes saildrive out of the question.. For that matter I think you should stay with the outboard or get a new boat. That sailplan is much to pretty to mess with..

Don''t be silly! The assumed benefits of an inboard engine could never outweigh the real benefits of an outboard motor. It is my personal opinion that there is no sailboat less than 30 feet that needs an inboard and some larger ones would do well with an outboard. If you really want an inboard engine, buy a powerboat! At least that way it becomes more acceptable to look at your boat for what it is: a support platform for the engine!

You know having an outboard is realy nice, It is simple to work on and replace if ever neaded. You can use it on your inflatable. and you can bring it clean out of the water when under sail wich will make your boat sail nicer. Inboard are a pain in the ars. and it leaves you with more valuble room for head sails.

All of you certainly make a good case for accepting my wife''s opinion. Even I''m beginning to agree. Thanks for the input. I have assessed the additional space requirements, et al. I am sure you are all correct the cost vs benefits are not worth it.
