D&M|22 is on a distinguished road
Hull Number One

I recently purchased my first sailboat. A D&M 22. I have also found that it is hull number one. Does this mean anything other than I have purchased the oldest D&M 22 I possible could have? LOL! Just wondering because it could use a fresh paint job, needs some deck repair, etc... any reason to treat this differently if it's the first one made? Thanks!

If I was the builder, and it was in good shape it would make a good ad for quality.

So far I haven't heard of anyone collecting sailboats though, but if there was it would be a must have for a D&M 22 collection.

It means exactly that.. it's possible that early models have some issues that were addressed on subsequent models, but after all this time the original may well have been 'fixed' if indeed it was necessary..

Enjoy!

tommays will become famous soon enough
There seems to a lot of interest in hull #1 of many boats but it does not seem to add any value

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Thanks for the feedback! I assumed as much about the hull number. But you know what they say about that. Just going to fix the small soft spot on the deck, give her a coat of topside paint, and sail her. Thanks again!

I have a friend who owns the Ericson 35-3 that was used on the brochure. That fact did not command any extra value when he bought it.

I doubt most would pay any extra for this one.

Maybe if it was an original Herreshoff.

A celebrity connection might command more though. Famous person's boat or so and so sailed on this boat, etc. At least David Crosby thinks so. His boat has been on the market for quite a few years. It was listed at $1,000,000. Now it is down to $850,000. There could be some valuable "stashes" though

Well, Crosby IS a celebrity. It might not be the same as buying Bogart's boat, or a kennedy yacht, and in the world of "celebrity" versus "old wood boat"...I think I know which one affects the value more. :-)
