One idea is to use self-regulating heat tape along all fresh water lines, so I wouldn't have to use any antifreeze for the showers, sinks, etc. It costs us a few hours and $100 in antifreeze to winterize everythibg (4 heads, 5 sinks, 2 pumps, 1 accumulator, 1 water heater, and 1 transom shower). The investment would pay off over time, and I'd still be able to use the sink.

Have you considered a block heater for your engine? That route seems easier than rigging a webcam and thermometer, etc...

Fully intend to sail all winter, weather depending. We've had either really crazy winds, or almost nothing recently, trying to get the nice wind days to coincide with the weekends is a little tricky. Warm and dry clothing is definitely the key to an enjoyable winter on the water.
Last winter we sailed a lot, including acting as an icebreaker to get out of the marina on New Year's day

That's an idea worth checking into. There are seawater hoses upstream from the engine. I wonder if the block heater would keep those hoses from freezing.

Either way, the worry is that somehow the shore power cable gets disconnected, or a marina breaker gets thrown. That's what the webcam is for, to detect those events.

I forgot to add that such an event will trigger an email to me (and others) from the webcam. Here's the plan I'm looking at implementing. The bilge alarm already exists, so I'll tap some current of it to drive a relay and put the needed 5v into the alarm sensor.

We're doing the annual La Conner Christmas Boat Parade again this weekend. We've done almost every one since 2003. We're not in it, we're tied up at a town dock watching it go by. This was taken the following day after a previous trip. Looks like we're going to be snow free this year.

They make inline coolant heaters of varying sizes that plug into a standard wall socket. I bet one of those would work well for you. Or perhaps a pad heater? Just some food for thought. Enjoy!
