Winter Sailing 2011-2012

Went for a sail on Sunday. Hugo (HugoSalt) went out on his boat too, and we took pictures of each other's boats. Enjoy.

The boat was lit up by the sun in this picture.

The sun was setting as we sailed.

This one might be my favorite.

We managed to get the Christmas lights up and connected to the inverter. (Think spinnaker halyard tied to the midpoint, zip ties onto the backstay and onto an ad-hoc removable forestay.)

It was pretty festive.

Goals for this winter:
1) Sail every week until the ice get's too thick.
2) Sail to CT for a weekend. (Targeting the weekend after New Years.)
3) Fly the asym
Anyone else getting out?

Regards,
Brad

Winter Sailing with the Local Frostbite Series

I am doing winter sailiing for the first time this winter with the local Frostbite Series. Every Saturday on a J24 for 3-4 h. Both days that I have done it, it has been warm for the activity level that I am doing; constant stant tacking, body weight adjustments, etc. By the ned of the race, I am really black and blue from getting banged around.. During the race I am sweating like a dog, during lulls I am chilled. A few weekends ago it was very windy and a lot of 45 deg water spray.

Same for me, minus the trip to Connecticut of course. Plus some light, winter maintenance. I want to check my valve tappet clearances, and secondary ignition stuff. I'm looking to get some butyl tape from Maine Sail as well.

Sure planning on sailing this Winter. Next planned day is Christmas. Hopefully there will be wind. If we get bonuses this week, I'm planning on getting some good foulies.

Got up off the boat this morning and it was 28 deg.

< I don't think I'm gonna get any points for winter sailing, since we're currently in Florida >

I assume you have to caveat this; it only counts if you're north of, say, 40 degrees latitude?

Nice post, Bene.... do those lights meet colregs requirements?

We have a New Years Eve overnight planned, a club tradition for a few of us.. but lately helping our kids with the granddaughter is cutting into off season sailing a bit....

No sailing for me for about a month, or new years day maybe as last year, when I took the lights down! Last year was just over 2000, this year closer to 3000 lights on her!

Capnblu, wingNwing and smackdaddy like this.

Ugh, I'd love to do some winter sailing here in Portland, but where are the darn winds? Seems like we've been averaging 2-3 knots for a few weeks, with nothing good in sight.
