Bumfuzzles, Propeller shafts & babies

As their blog has been focusing on babies (been there, done that 50 years ago) I kind of lost interest in it. However, I thought Pat's December 8th & 9th posts were very interesting:

Just read the new posts. I'm always impressed at how he's able to figure stuff out and get it fixed. The mechanical ingenuity and knowledge he's shown over the past few years really blows the "rich kid sailor" crap out of the water.

Go the Fuzzles!

What's interesting to me is his description of enjoying a day of sailing... from the book I got the impression that they hated every minute of it.

I can't imagine having kids at sea so young... Not for me!

Smackdaddy, when you are cruising you have to find a way to do things. At times you amaze yourself with your creativiity. When something goes wrong it is a royal pain in the patootie but afterward you fill very good about yourself.

As to babies, have not cruised with one for more than several weeks many years ago (Lake Ontario to Martha's Vineyard), but we met a French couple in Panama last year. They had two young ones onboard and was 8 months pregnant. She was going to have the baby in Panama City and then they were going to head into the Pacific when the baby was about 2 months old. Not for me, but people do it.

One of the better definitions of "Seamanship" has to do with the application of preparedness, prudence, and forethought towards the avoidance of situations that might require extraordinary "Seamanship" to extricate oneself from, to begin with... (grin)

Each of the "dramas" he manages to cope with could have been easily avoided - though doing so might make for a less entertaining blog, of course... How about assembling a shaft coupling properly to begin with, for example?

Configuring a workable and dependable reefing system is one of the most important things any skipper should do, and it's not exactly rocket science, after all... For one to have sailed from the Bay Area to Puerto Vallarta, and still not have devised a mainsail reefing setup that will be bulletproof in 25 knots of wind, that one really is a bit hard to fathom... Taking young children to sea on a boat where even that most rudimentary and fundamental necessity remains a work in progress, well... pretty hard to justify, IMHO...

No surprise that dinghy davit setup wasn't up to the task, at a glance one could see that was a disaster waiting to happen... Why anyone would choose to dangle a dinghy off a canoe stern offshore, with all that flush foredeck available on the Spindrift 43, is completely beyond me...

Perhaps he needs to go with something more like this - it's Caribbean 1500 Cattle Drive Certified, after all... (grin)

Well, I'd say that's half the definition. The other half is actually getting out onto that sea and dealing with stuff when it breaks or goes wrong (which it always does).

Now you have to admit, he's pretty damn good with the latter half (and he's getting better with the former).

PS - never been a fan of the dinghy davit solution.

I was initially going to write basically the same thing but feared for my life. Couldn't quite figure out what the "pin" was in his explanation of the fix, maybe the key? or what?
