One of the better definitions of "Seamanship" has to do with the application of preparedness, prudence, and forethought towards the
avoidance of situations that might require extraordinary "Seamanship" to extricate oneself from, to begin with... (grin)
Each of the "dramas" he manages to cope with could have been easily avoided - though doing so might make for a less entertaining blog, of course... How about assembling a shaft coupling properly
to begin with, for example?
Configuring a workable and dependable reefing system is one of the most important things any skipper should do, and it's not exactly rocket science, after all... For one to have sailed from the Bay Area to Puerto Vallarta, and still not have devised a mainsail reefing setup that will be bulletproof in 25 knots of wind, that one really is a bit hard to fathom... Taking young children to sea on a boat where even that most rudimentary and fundamental necessity remains a work in progress, well... pretty hard to justify, IMHO...
No surprise that dinghy davit setup wasn't up to the task, at a glance one could see that was a disaster waiting to happen... Why anyone would choose to dangle a dinghy off a canoe stern offshore, with all that flush foredeck available on the Spindrift 43, is completely beyond me...
Perhaps he needs to go with something more like this - it's Caribbean 1500 Cattle Drive Certified, after all... (grin)
