Tragic. The bay water is in the upper 40s/low 50s right now. You have about 4 hours to live if you fall in. A PFD will help you survive the initial cold shock and eventual physical immobility. Absent a survival suit, one faces hypothermia and cardiac arrest within several hours.

Does the bay warm up in the summer? Lake Superior really doesn't so unless you get out fast that PFD just gives them a body! Better a good harness and stay on the boat.--Dale

Very sad news. Condolences offered to family and friends of the departed.

Any info on conditions and the boat model?

And absent the PFD you'll likely reach exhustion and drown within 1/2 hour to an hour.

I've read that without a PFD you have no reason to fear death of hypothermia since you'd never live long enough for it to be a problem.

Yes, in Summer survival times would be indefinite as long as you could stay afloat.
