Racing/Touring/Fun Event??????

Hello fellow sailors,

I accepted the position of race chair for the next season.
I want to bring the non racer marina occupants together with the "hard-core"racers in some fun events, next year !

In other words, The racing program is top notch, but we want to get some people involved who are afraid of the start and maybe also afraid to see their name all the way at the bottom of the list , when the results are posted.

I need some ideas, what we can do to get those folks involved. I am thinking along the lines of a GPS Hunt ( al la geocaching, where you find "treasures"when you get exactly to the correct spot ) or a Poker Run .....

Please let me know, what cool event you participated in, which was fun and low key, non contact ( lol ) social "non-Racing"

Thanks Thorsten

That is on Lake Carlisle in Illinois.
10 miles long 5 miles wide. 3 marinas , 10 or so coves to anchor

Thanks Thorsten

Racing/Touring/Fun Event??????

Our club has incorporated a few wrinkles into some of its destination cruises. A bottle of whiskey supported by an empty plastic milk jug was dropped at a predesignated location and time 2 to 3 hours prior to the start of the search. Best guesses had to be made as to its travel in the prevailing winds and tidal currents. Recovery was its own reward!
Another fun thing, in and only in, light air conditions, is the Penultimate Race in which the next to last finisher or the only one with tow intact, wins. Each boat towes an empty one gallon plastic milk jug on a thread 100 feet long. The participants try to cut off each others tow while retaining their own. The thread must be weak enough to break when attempting to drag the milk jug under a hull. The "penultimate" feature prevents a fast boat from running away from the fleet to finish first, or a boat to dog it by sailing way off course to avoid mixing it up and risking its tow. All boats must recover their tows and a variation in the game is to allow each boat to reattach their tow only once.

We have fun with a pursuit race. The slowest boat starts first, then the next, according to the handicap rule being used, until everyone has started. After that, theoretically, the order of finish is the final results . We add to the mix, however, by allowing each boat a total of 20 minutes of engine time, which they may take at any time in the 16 mile race. It makes for some interesting switches and strategies, and could be quite fun on a flukey lake.
