How many sailors save every thing.

Just wondering how many sailors do what i do and save every little thing for sailing. even somtimes broken stuff. i come to realize it's easier to go through a box of sailing gear instead of a half hour to a store.

And going to the store only helps if they happen to have it! I have a storage shed full a goodies for boats,You have to have just the right thing,& sometimes it needs to be tested out to see it fits! Otherwise there is aways Ebay. But;That can take some waiting to get the right part. And offen I read what I want , not what it says, and just end up adding to the shed!--Dale

Of course! But set limits.

If the pile gets too big, thin it. Never keep defective electrical components. Never keep anything with a dangerous crack or flaw, unless you clearly mark the defect or better, destroy that section.

And never install anything that isn't functionally as good as new. It's just a waste of time and leads to a junk boat. When you fix something, fix it BETTER.

I don't keep ANYTHING broken, seldom even used fasteners. If they aren't slot head anythings, I will examine them to see if they can be buffed up like new on my buffing wheel but otherwise they go. I think I'm one of the few people who ever used the term "completely re-fastened" in reference to a fiberglass boat in a sales ad.

Now gear - different story. I am currently selling off everything I haven't used for twenty years. Everything newer I'm keeping "just in case".

Just to give you an idea of how bad I am though - the amount of surplus gear on board once swung the decision for me on buying a boat.

One thing I have found very effective over the years is, when buying fasteners, I always buy at least twice as many as I need. After a while you build up a nice supply on hand and don't have to go the the store for every last job.

If it's obsolete, it goes. If it's functional, it's still on the boat because it didn't need replacing.

When I buy fasteners, I too buy extras. When I remove something, I save the fasteners if they are in good shape. I have a box of loose hardware dating back to the 1970s and my father's boats, so I rarely need to buy something like a screw.

I have a used main and a used genoa and it's killing me me to have them sit in the attic. I think that I'll consign them at Bacons.

It's a sickness! Hard to part with anything. Genetic, I think. Medication might help. But first I have to admit there's a problem.

My name is Chris, and I'm a hoarder of sailboat junk.

Now for the next 11 steps!

I have some disorder with pumps. I swear I can/will rebuild them. I install a new pump when the old fails/leaks, bring the failed pump home and order the rebuild kit. It then sits there until I accept that the old pump isn't worth rebuilding.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

I used to keep a good amount of spares on board. Anything from engine parts to whatever is needed. I had a lot of pnd the problems while curuising and the parts I kept were not the needed ones. Now I keep nothing on the boat. It is much easier to buy what is necessary when you need it.
