Another freebee...

When I purchased my Morgan 33 O.I. I was fairly confident the roller furling system was not for me. After a few weeks of battling the system I decided it would be replaced with an Alado, a system that I had used for 5 years on a 27 Catalina and never had a problem with it. When I installed the Alado, a lightly used/new sail was installed that complied with the new furler. Consequently, I still have the old furler and sail and have absolutely no use for it whatsoever. I was going to toss it into the marina dumpster, but my loving spouse suggested that I give it away. The sail is one that has a stainless steel cable stitched into the luff. The drum attaches to a connector at the tack, while the halyard attaches to a swivel at the head.

If anyone is interested, the entire assembly is free for the asking. It is stored at home in a sailbag and I'm not going to pack and ship this monster. It's too heavy and I'm too old. I live near the head of Chesapeake Bay and if you want it, take it away. If it's not gone by the end of January, it becomes bait for a dumpster diver.

Interested persons can email me at travlin_easy at verizon.net

Cheers,

Gary

Gary,
Nice of you to be offering such a thing to the sailing community at large.
I have a furler on our boat already so I'm not a candidate but if I was I'd want to know what brand the furler was. Common makes are: Harken, ProFurl, Schaffer, CDI...
When we replaced our Harken unit with a Furlex unit I also gave away the old set up to another sailor in our yard. I hope that brought me some 'good karma' points.
I'm sure you will find a 'taker' for this as you did the wind generator.
Good for you.

Not really sure about the brand name. The drum is stored inside the boat right now and I won't be getting up there until Thursday to bring it home. I'll post the information if I can find it.

The Alado is an interesting unit Gary, I'm considering one, would be very happy to hear your experience of it over the past 5 years

The Alado system is among the least expensive and best constructed roller furling systems I've seen. The design is such that it distributes pressure evenly on the forestay, yet after five years of intense usage there was no noticeable wear on the forestay.

The aluminum foils are designed to overlap, and there are no pins to worry about loosing. The drum is constructed from heavy-gauge aluminum, and rides on a special bearing that doesn't create wear on the forestay. The drum is quite large therefore decreasing the amount of pressure needed to furl the system.

A couple years ago Practical Sailor magazine evaluated roller furlers and placed this one right the top of the list. After installing my Alado system, several other boaters in the marina saw it in action, asked where I purchased it, and with a few months, they too installed the Alado.

Installation is very easy, can be accomplished by one person in less than 30 minutes, but it's a bit easier if you have a second person to help install the drum.

The Alado system uses its own halyard, and it can be rigged for using a pair of headsails on the same system. I've never done this, but there are folks that have and reported excellent results.

You can download complete installation instructions from ALADO - Furler and Roller - main page

Hope this helps,

Gary

Nice, thanks Gary. Does it reef too, or strictly just for furling?

I've sailed in various weather conditions with the Alado, everything from gales to just a whisper of wind. In the worst situations, I sometimes used just half the jib, and when there were really nasty times, just a tab sticking out to facilitate better steerage, so in a sense I guess you could call that reefing.

Oh, I just read your part about shipping. Nevermind. I should have read it more closely... Thanks anyway.
