Suckers! Did me some sailing tonight.

I thought all you poor souls who are grounded for the winter might like a picture of PNW winter lake sailing...

Went sailing in a pretty good blow this afternoon. It was my first time sailing reefed. Reefing was needed for comfort if not safety when I went out plus I was worried the wind would actually kick up as the evening rolled on.
The wind started to ease though and I was able to hoist the jib to practice heaving-to...very strange, that...the boat balances quite nice with only a little trimming...crabs very slowly to lee. It think with a more steady wind direction(impossible here on the lake) I could nearly hold her dead still.

This is maybe the last one for me though...I need to get her on the hard for some interior refitting and as spring rolls in, paint...but if the weather holds I may squeeze a few more weeks out.

All in all it was a good evening sail, I learned alot of boat control and it did alot to build my confidence in the boat and her's in me.

Turns out you can also do it on the salty stuff in the PNW too

Was some interesting sailing for sure, 7 knots on a close reach with 2 reefs in, 5.5 knots running just under the 115% jib, and 7.4knots downwind with a little bit of surfing action going on
Faster, jackdale and jameswilson29 like this.

Paul I'm still too chicken for the big water. I am going to Lake Washington in the spring and then Lake Ozette for the 4th of July. After that I will cross Port Susan from Kayak point to a friends beach house on Camano Is.

THEN...

After that I want to cross the Sound...Edmonds to Kingston and back the next day.

Seems kinda lofty right now but what the heck. Your only young once.

It's just like the little water, only bigger and less pleasant to drink
Seems this sailing malarky is about exploring new things and pushing yourself to bigger and better things, the pace you do that, and how much you push, is entirely up to you. Sounds like you're doing just fine though.

Jed,

Edmonds to kingston and back is a dinner or lunch trip back and forth. Or better yet, they have as you probably know, or maybe not, the best close marina selection of IC places with in walking distance of the Marina.

That is a pretty easy trip back and forth frankly. The hard part will be the boat launch, raise the mast at the dock, and take down after. A lot of folk from here with boats your size do this as a day sail. Watch the wind, as there seems to be a wind tunnel betwen richmond beach and the other side to whidbey in a south wind. Always about 10-15 more up here than south for some strange reason.

Yeah Marty, I have done the math on several of my Edmonds/Kingston ferry crossings. I'm sure I could do the back and forth in a long day...but the family all still live in Kingston...so I don't need to.

And at 21' I'm bound to get a little more beat up and take a little longer than the big boats.
