That can be a nasty bit of ocean. When we were at Easter Island there were a couple of boats going to Valdivia, Chile which is at 40*S as I remember. We were talking to one on the SSB as he was heading south and then east and we were going westward toward Pitcairn. They had two full-blown gales that they rode out with series drogue extended. I would imagine it would only get worse further south - it is incredible to look at a weather map of the Southern Ocean - tight, nasty little depressions with huge, very high highs in between to build the pressure gradient.
The Chilean Armada look after the entry and exit procedures at Easter. Really nice guys, know their stuff and very helpful.
