Quissett Harbor Boatyard Building Gutted in Blaze

Cape Cod Times is reporting that a boat-storage building at the Quissett Harbor Boatyard in Falmouth, Massachusetts, has been completely destroyed by a fire that began at around 2:00 p.m. today (January 4).

Supposedly, they stored 12 1/2 's in this building.

A fire that tore through a storage shed in an iconic boatyard in the Cape Cod village of Woods Hole today spared some antique vessels but destroyed two boats that were stored at the facility, a representative of the family-owned business said.

“It engulfed the building very quickly” at about 2 p.m., said Weatherly Dorris, 49, who runs the Quissett Harbor Boatyard with her husband Richard, in a telephone interview.

Dorris said that no one was injured in the fire, but that two family-owned boats stored at the wrecked shed were completely destroyed. She declined to say what kind of boats they were or when they were built.

She said that about a dozen other vessels appeared to be okay, though some of their parts -- such as booms and masts -- were irreparably damaged.

Those boats are wooden Herreshoff vessels dating as far back as the 1930s, and fiberglass Doughdish reproductions that were built decades later, according to Dorris.

A fire Wednesday afternoon tore through a Falmouth boatyard warehouse that has stood since the 1930s.

At about 2 p.m. firefighters from five departments responded to the two-alarm fire at the Quissett Harbor Boatyard on Quissett Harbor Road. Flames reached well above the building’s roof and were visible from miles away.

No one was in the building, which serves as a workshop and provides storage for boats and equipment, when the fire started, said Weatherly Dorris, who owns the boatyard.

An update:

Dorris, whose family has operated the boatyard in the southeast corner of Buzzards Bay for the past 54 years, told us that she intends to rebuild on the same footprint as the old 2-story building, which had been in use since the late 1800s. “We will be open for business this spring,” Dorris stated, adding that launching and rigging of boats kept at the yard will not be affected by the blaze.
