Among the myths incorporated by Gabriel Garcia Mirquez in his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, an explanation of great Latin-American truths in narrative clothing, is a Colombian folk-memory. Apparently, when Drake attacked Riohacha, one lady was so startled by the cannon''s roar that she sat down on a hot
stove. The results were lasting, and distressing: a limp, an inability to sit up straight, and a permanent aversion to sex.
