Man Overboard Poles?

Are they a thing of the past? Have not seen many in recent years.

tommays will become famous soon enough
Still have to keep them on the race boat and if you have and MOB at night you will really regret NOT having one with a strobe so the MOB and the boat can find it

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Mom to the Rescue

You may not see MOB Poles as often as many yachts are now equiped with something like this: MOM-8A Man Overboard Module

Most charter boats that I use for teaching have MOB poles. We use them for teaching MOB. I tell the students in a real situation to get one in the water as a datum point. The flag is very useful in determining wind direction.

I wish that the poles would be equipped with a piece of line attached to either side of the float; an MOB could hold that line.

Yeah, Squidd, the prices are absurd. Friend of mine needed one for a nearshore race. Eight foot+ stick of bamboo, a gallon jug foam filled & adhered with a $5 can of spray foam, some lead tire weights (used, free) melted in a can fastened to the bottom, another $5 for a nice can of white paint.

Total cost about $15, $20 with the dayglo paper laminated as a flag up top. Strobe optional and extra, nice idea. But $700...for $700 I'd make one up out of carbon fiber with a cappucino machine and ebook reader to entertain the guy hanging onto it in the water.
