A nice dog will just beg the attention of your chip hammer, grinder and magical potions of epoxy, red lead and other noxious coatings, instead of slapping back. Since there are so many top dogs up in your neck of the woods, why not gather up the pack for your testsail? Sounds like a good day out for the old dogs. Enjoy your sail. Let the rest of us hounds know how it works out.
My tongue-in-cheek trash talk aside, you bring up excellent points.

My problem is that even a great number of Westsails that I'm seeing on the market are up a year or more, at prices that 5 years ago would have been untouchable.

Not being argumentative, but like this red metal boat being listed for awhile, is it the price, the market, or is it the boat? Like everything else in life, and short of a survey and test sail, I would guess it's a combination of all three.

And, no, there isn't a huge selection of boats up here. Like everything else in this state, as soon as it gets here, the price doubles or triples.

At the end of the day, I was looking for a strong forgiving boat that I can grow with, that will kindly remind me of the rusty modest skills I developed years ago, and then allow me to build new ones as I slowly venture further out; eventually living in the post apocalyptic expanse of the vast South Pacific, far from land with my 2 house bunnies and trusty dog, fighting to rebuild the race, and of course, fighting zombies.

But seriously, I don't want a boat that requires a 15knt wind to do 2knts on the water. Big boat and heavy sails get old single handing - but on the flip-side, I'm not in a rush to get anywhere.

The last boat that put a bee in my bonnet was a yellow 30' Sagitta made in Denmark I saw 2 years ago, for sale in SanFran. The timing just wasn't right to pull the trigger, but I also just didn't have the stones to go for it.

Then on one of these forums, I saw the postings of the guy who bought her for peanuts, and she was on the market for over 2 years.

He just raved about how he loved his little yellow 30' full keel double ender. How she was bristol - thought he only needed to oil the toe rail 'just to be safe' - how he was planning to sail the Atlantic the next month to a Sagitta regatta in Germany.

...god I hate that guy.

Thanks.

Go fetch the bone. It looks fairly tidy. It may suit your purposes. If it sails well and you like it, offer 15K, pending the survey. Keep looking at your escape vehicles with a critical eye and you will be bound to find something. Nothing will be perfect, all will be a compromise. Rememeber, it's not so much the machine as the man or sailor.

It all makes sense to me. Market decides price. This is a tough market, moreso for odd ducks like wood, or odder, steel sailboats. You might be looking at a real gem, you'll know more when you sail her. You can also inquire about the sailing characteristics. The prior owner of WS answered those questions honestly, as did the owner of a steel schooner I looked at. I'm with you about the speed. I don't race and don't want to. I do like a boat that gets along in anything from gentle to fresh breezes, is easy to singlehand, and has a comfortable motion. I've got one.

'aeventyr60', thanks for the salty replies to my rather 'gay' posts from a guy that's out there 'doing it'.

'Brent', thanks for the level-headed perspective from a guy that's out there putting/keeping these girls together.

'WanderingStar', thanks for the thoughts somewhere in the middle.

You've given me a lot to think about, thank you, great forum.

A friend made a living buying , fixing up, and selling old boats. When his adds for one got no response , he thought " May the price I'm asking is too low. " So he would double the price tag , interest would jump drastically, and it would sell quickly. Same boat, different price tag.
Don't judge anything by its price tag. Don't be so gullible. There are some super deals.

When you're a noobie, it's tough separating the noise from the signal. I also don't want the added guilt of screwing someone down on their luck. Hence, my posts. I appreciate your thoughts, thanks Brent.
