posting etiquette

i'm never sure about posting etiquette/straying from the original topic,i know i have at times and have saw others that do too,it does seem a little unfair to the op who asks a specific question about a specific topic, its never my intention to p off anyone

It depends... Usually the OPs question is answered in the first couple responces and the rest are "me toos" , "I agree" and the occasional "that didn't work for me"...

Much after that is open discussion where you may want to question or get clarification from one of the "responders" which may take a tangent to OPs question that's generally OK...

Sometimes the responces just leave the door open for a one line "zinger" ba da boom ya gota take it...

What's really frowned upon is asking a secondary, conflicting or "redirecting" question in an ongoing thread...one where you should really just start your own thread... that derails the thought process...

Usually if the OP didn't get a satisfactory answer to original question they may ask it again or a responder may ask it again to corrall the thread back on track...

That's assuming they (OP) are still participating and didn't abandon the thread to the wolves...

I have one going now "Energy Audit"...

My original question (how to do the math) is pretty much answered, but an interesting point was made about solar recharging, and controler matching...a tangent of my original question but still very informative...

Even though I'm not participating I'm following and learning much...I'd hate to see it shut down or brought back to "math".. and technically it still followes the OP....

I mean Hey...it's the internet...it's entertainment... It's not like we're in church or taking the SATs...

about the energy thing! i have spent too many hours smothering in god awlful heat and only warm beer or rhum so i'm working toward a solar system that will atleast supply enough for a decent fan and maybe later a microfrige, the led lights are good i also have one of those micro anchor lights,a few weeks ago i bought a gpl-8d lifeline battery-1350 cold cranking power 476 amp hours and a morning star controller,i have 45 watts of solar panels and plan to add maybe another 50 or so,i'm thinking of replacing my bimini with one i've yet to make to put the rest of the panels on,i don't need or want a t.v. or aircon

I think it's a natural evolution, really... as indicated above once the original query has been resolved then the conversation can wander, as it would if we were all sitting around a table full of beer somewhere.

I think it's only a problem if it hijacks a still-topical series of posts.

As long as the original question was answered, I see no problem in digressing. It's like having a conversation. And often you learn more than you expected.
