Pin testing a sail is an age old technique to determine if the sail cloth is structurally sound. Take an ordinary straight-pin, push the point into the sail-cloth and if the material is structurally sound the pin will make a popping sound as it penetrates the cloth. If the cloth has deteriorated, the pin will easily pass through the cloth and make almost no sound at all.
