All US Diesel for boats is red?
If so take care when crossing the pond. Take a look at this:

Re: All US Diesel for boats is red?
I've never seen red diesel and use to work as a dock master... (30 yrs ago in college)
I've hear of it, but never actually seen it.

Red-dyed fuel in the U.S. is reserved for off-road uses such as marine and farm equipment. It indicates that federal road taxes were not paid, but it is not duty-free. Some yachts will pay state sales tax on their fuel, though yachts leaving the country can sign an affidavit to that effect and avoid state sales taxes. Whether sales taxes have been paid or not, all marine fuel sold in the United States is dyed red.

Red-dyed fuel in Germany is duty-free and also reserved for off-road uses but, as in all European Union countries, is only permitted for commercial vessels. Both megayachts fined are private vessels.

I "think" red diesel is agricultural....cheaper for farmers to put in tractors and farm equipment...but not to be used in vehicles....

Edit - NM..I didn't read ftldiver's entire post...thought it was a long sig quote....sorry.

Re: All US Diesel for boats is red?
from the article it doesn't really seem like you coud take your boat from the country that it first got fuel at

Re: All US Diesel for boats is red?
of course the solution is to incorporate the vessels and 'charter them' to a limited clientele.... of one.

Colors differ between countries. Between the US, Canada, Mexico and Guatemala I have had blue, red, green and clear put in my boat. In most countries they don't give you trouble if you have just arrived. My guess about this story is that they ticked someone off and it was an easy way to hassle them.

Re: All US Diesel for boats is red?
Dyed diesel is for things not subject to the road use tax. Mostly for farm equipment but I can see that it should be sold for boats too (we never faced that issue here in Tennessee, but we sold a lot to farmers :) ). At one point it had a higher sulfur content than road diesel, but I have no idea if that's still the case.

Red is non taxable in the U.S. for off road and farming. I have drove semi in the U.S. and have been tested in my truck for red fuel but blue is ok and red was ok in my backhoe or excavator. Dont know about boats. Just my 2 cents. I do get blue on my boat here at the docks though.

Re: All US Diesel for boats is red?

BIG disCUSSion on the Jeanneau-owners site re the red fuel. Seems like US, Canada, UK sell red dyed diesel when no road tax's are paid. Meanwhile, Netherlands is fining folks BIG time for any trace of red dye in the fuel system. Really bad for those in the UK, as no clear/green/blue'ish diesel is sold at the marina's. So for me, If i took off for europe from where I am, I'm in deep shista trouble! As my marina only sells red dyed diesel, due to no road taxes being paid! Which for the boat, bobcat, trackhoe that I have that are diesel, I do not need to pay.

IIRC, the issue in Europe, is whether or not VAT?!?! has been paid? I would hope, that being from somewhere other than Europe, while I would assume I am needing to pay VAT when I use something like fuel over their, the fuel I buy here would not have it, if they want the VAT for the fuel I bought over here, I should just have to pay the appropriate dollar (for lack of better currency useage) and be done with it. In the UK, they sell the red diesel WITH the proper VAT paid.......their are some issues over that way re all this.
