Downeaster 38, built in the orient in the 70's and early 80's. Check it out on sailboatdata.com

I believe the Downeaster boats were built in Santa Ana, not the Far East.

I looked at a DE38 in San Pedro a few years ago that had a wooden rail (taffrail?) around the back of the cockpit rather than a SS pushpit. It was one of the very few "modern" boats I've seen where that sort of thing actually looked like it belonged there.

Yep, it's certainly a DE38. We looked at about a dozen of them when we were shopping for our live-aboard cruiser. It was our first choice, but eventually we settled for our Vagabond 39. Many times I've wondered what would have gone differently had we been able to find a DE38 instead...

If you are looking for first-hand info, current member and contributor gtod25 used to own one and cruised aboard her extensively.

Cheers,
PF

The Downeaster's owners forum is a great resource ... Downeasteryachts.com. We own and liveaboard a DE32. Great boat!
