I put a solar powered tiki in front of the mast. At night the eyes lit up.

In light air, my racing crew fastens a marionette of the Lord Ganesha to the pulpit with nylon cable ties. His legs and trunk flog when the breeze picks up and occasionally a sequin from his crown hits the forecrew in the eye but I'll take my rat-riding, elephant-headed god over your filthy mermaid any day.

This one was on a boat across the float from us in Hawaii. I've seen some that were retrofitted to boats that weren't designed for them, some look Ok, some not. I don't think our boat would be a good candidate, but I like boats that have them. I don't know anywhere to suggest you find one, good luck.
I saw a wooden sailboat at a show in Pt. Townsend where the stem was carved into a face, really cool.
