Unreal!!!

Just got back from the finish of leg 4 of the Volvo and it looks to me that Camper went to the wrong side of the pin. They had to have thought the took third but the gybed around to the proper finish. Meanwhile Tele crossed the line for third. If this is the case talk about a major embarrassment for the home team.

Re: Unreal!!!

The finish was between a pin and RNZYS committee boat though on the other side a large launch was anchored and could be mistaken for the committee boat. What I saw was the two boats rounding North Head coming to the finish in an east/west direction. The wind in the Habour was from the NNE. Camper was the low boat and then crossed the back of Tele in what appeared to be a move to give some dirt. However after a short time Camper went higher closer to the shoreline. My thoughts were they might be getting a lift from or avoiding the tide because the wind shadow of the shore would likely affect them.

Tele continued down to the pin while Camper stayed up. Camper crossed the line between the pin and the large anchored launch prior to Tele crossing the line. People around me at Princess' Wharf started to clap thinking Camper had won but then Camper turned and headed staight south to the pin while Tele crossed it.

It appeared, after crossing the back of Tele, Camper got into an overlapping position and could have slowed Tele with dirty air while racing to the pin.

I just don't know what happened and have not seen anything about it on any of the news outlets.

Re: Unreal!!!

Sounds like pretty poor committee boat work for such an important event.

Re: Unreal!!!

Yeah, following the rules can make or break a race. I suspect we've all had an oops, racers and rc's alike.

Re: Unreal!!!

Paul is correct
Gybing around to finish won't do it. You have to cross the line from the direction of the last mark.

Re: Unreal!!!

I didn't mean to give the wrong impression. Camper sailed to the north of the line and crossed it if the line continued from the committee boat through the pin and then to the north. It would have crossed perhaps eight boat lengths to the north of the pin. After the apparent crossing of the finish line the sails flogged and people started to clap. The next thing I knew Camper was heading south towards the pin to finish by crossing the line on the correct side. I am assuming they gybed rather than tacked as that would be the faster way to turn. I do not know why they were to the north of the line in the first place but they had to sail back (south) beyond 90 degrees to their original course in order to cross the line on the correct side. It appeared to me they thought the finish line was to the north of where it truly was. I may be wrong but I don't think so.
