I have just looked at this week''s "weekly poll" and I am shocked to find that 55% of the respondents do not know the correct sound signal for an overtaking vessel. I hope that these people are just internet surfers and not boaters.
I suspect that the confusion over sound signals comes from two areas: (a) the idea in some quarters that sail always has right of way over power (almost half in that sample) and (b) the ColRegs "Narrow Channel" Rule that applies to "vessels" as opposed to Inland Rules that specify "power driven vesels")as regards signals.
