Out and Back Sail / Open Ocean Rendezvous -- Summer 2012

Are any other boats interested in joining us for an "Out and Back" sail this summer? We will sail out into the Atlantic ocean for 24 hours, turn around and then come back.

We will leave from Montauk (or several locations) at 2:00 PM on a Friday, weather permitting. If the participants would like to modify it to meet at a specific lat/lon, we could do that instead. And we could pick a lat/lon that is most convenient, considering each of our (Northeast US) starting places.

This is an opporunity to get some offshore time and be a bit creative and flexible in how we accomplish that. I'll be looking for additional crew, and others may too, so you need not have a boat to join in.

Regards,
Brad

Great idea. So few people actually do any sort of real shake-down or offshore trips before setting off. This trip should be a good one to see how you and your boat handle the different motion of being offshore.

Can we say......:puke

If there is interest in doing the same on the west coast I am available as crew!

For an average sized and performing boat in average summer conditions 24 hours equates to about 120nm in my experience.

Looks like you would have to cross major NY shipping lanes.

That sounds like a great idea and would give people two great overnight sails. Would love to join you as part of your crew. let me know by pm or give me a call(hope you still have my number) I'm boat less this yr so looking for all the opportunities as possible.

Yes. Let's see who wants to do it. If enough people from NJ, DE or MD want to go, then we would angle south a bunch. If it's CT, RI and MA, then we could stay north of NY.

Crossing at a right angle makes sense to. That should be in our informal rules for this informal trip.

We can also pay attention to the visibility a little more, when deciding to go/no-go.

Brad

Sound like a good goal to aim for.

If it will be off NJ, DE, MD, VA it may be something I will try for, but 120 nm off for me would be 36 to 48 hrs.

I am planning on one or two overnights off Delmarva this summer.

Ulladh,

To be clear, it's not 120nm; it's 24 hours. If we do a rendezvous to a lat/lon, then we'd adjust the location to suit slower boats, as much as possible. The more the merrier.

Brad

Med- there is a group that heads out of Neah Bay a couple hundred miles each summer. I forget what it's called, I'll try to find it. The lady that organizes it was in at Blakely and told me about it.

Did a search, couldn't find anything about it.

The 120 nm was from Treilley, a reasonable distance to cover in 24 hrs at 5 knots.

How about a location 24 hrs ENE of Cape May and 24 hrs SSW of Montauk?

Schedule departure time and or speed to arrive at a set time?
