Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

Came across this today and thought I'd share it, for whatever it's worth -- it's a graphic, non-commercial and updated hourly, showing the movement, flow, and speeds of wind across the continental United States. It's currently of little use to sailors except perhaps as a learning tool but it might have significant potential, perhaps for passage planning purposes, if it could be connected to a data source for offshore winds. If nothing else, it's freaking cool!

Re: Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

This is actually kind of useful for us here in Denver. And yes, it shows the high winds that I'm sitting in as I sit here writing... :-)

Nice find! Thanks.

Re: Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

Ain't it? I keep looking at that wind shear north of Memphis, referring to normal weather maps and can't for the life of me figure out what is causing it...

Re: Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

That is awesome (and graphically representing why I am not sailing today in AR)!

Re: Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

It is cool, not sure it is useful from an actual sailing standpoint, I prefer this source personally
SailFlow.com - WA - puget sound Wind Data

I've seen a few others, like "weatherunderground" that for me locally, seem to pull from the same weather stations. Some say it is more accurate than sailflow....

Re: Real-Time U.S. Wind Map

Another one of those totally cool internet sites. As I watch what must be a very nice low right around Denver, the image is as much art as science. But what else is new. The science of Hubble is magnificent art. Thanks for the link.
