This ship survived a 5k NM journey, it isn't like it's gonna sink now. They should try to tow it or at least pump that fuel out.
I just know that if I spill an ounce of diesel in the Alameda estuary, I'll get fined a fortune and charged a million dollars for cleanup costs.

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

I think that any amount of petroleum spilt in our waters is to much. That vessel would also carry lube oil and contaniments related to refridgeration. Were i not retired I would be quite happy to go after and recover that ship.

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

Why not let it come to us, that way no one has to tow it. It's drifted this far, jeez. We truly are idiots sometimes...

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

our government has already spent a small fortune just going out there to see what to do with it. colud have had it already towed back three times for what they have already spent.
Price to tow $500,000, price to shoot at it $1m, price to shoot at it and send all the dignitaries out there to watch it sink priceless?

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

I would think that they could at least pump the diesel fuel out of her tanks before they sink her.

Too late, she actually ended offshore from Sitka Alaska and coast guard used 25mm cannon fire on her.

Talk about a Last Voyage...How'd you like to be becalmed in that Pacific Gyre one evening slurping on your favorite beverage and have that thing suddenly slide up next to you...we've all seen too many movies but I'd have to get Scotty to fire up the iron jenny and get the bleep out of there!!!!

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

I'd take a few crew and board her...then we'd all split up so we're each alone.....I've seen movies, I know what to do.....

Re: Coast guard to sink ship

I read in the WSJ that it was being prepared to be scrapped before the tsunami hit. No navigation system, or anything left, I could be wrong, but I'm guessing the tanks weren't full... Would have been so much cooler to use a missile!
