LWL and Hull Speed

I think I read that a boat''s speed is benefitted by a wide stern because of the boat''s wave formation. All other things being equal, does a boat with a canoe stern have a lower hull speed than a boat with a broad stern?

It is a bit more complex than that but generally a double ender lacks the breakaway speed of a boat with a finer bow and more bearing aft. Double enders have a tendancy to squat at higher speeds lowering the actual hull speed somewhat from a more modern design.

Calder''s Cruising Handbook has some examples in his text . Great book and general info - Go to a bookstore and take a quick look if you don''t want to spend the $$. But after spending some time looking at the book I bought it and its one of my more referenced books
