Send 'em a bill and suggest they find a new hobby.

They're sailing a small boat in "frigid" waters and they don't have lifejackets or wetsuits - they have a death wish.

Hmm, that looks like a keelboat. I know a 16 foot is small as keelboats go, but even so, it seems like it shouldn't just lay over like a dinghy. Maybe it needs a bit more ballast?

If not, then I would assume capsizing to be a normal part of sailing it...

Yeh-weird that a keelboat would capsize and swamp-they should of been wearing their life jackets, but even so it doesn't look as though they could have bailed it out and self rescued.

Open boat, spinnaker, small craft advisory, cold (COLD) water. Makes for some good storytelling, anyway.

I saw this on the news and I thought it looked like a daggerboard. The boat was totally on it's side and didn't look like it had a keel. Either way pretty dumb...

Re: Near miss on Lake Michigan

I just looked again, and I still think it's a keelboat. There may have been some distortion from light refracting through the water surface, but it appeared to be slightly swept back, smoothly faired at the hull joint. It appeared to have a small bulb.

At one point, the video switched to a still of a couple of similar looking boats in cradles. These definitely had keels--but I don't know if they were supposed to be the same type, or if they just pulled up a stock photo of a small sailboat. I haven't seen a mention of the type of the boat in question.
