Strait of Gibraltar: East to West

I've just read the interesting article Strait of Gibraltar Strategies which says: "Good reference books are the RCC Pilotage Foundation Guide, Atlantic Spain and Portugal which has the most information on navigating the Strait ..."

I had previously bought the North Africa pilot, thinking this would be the best information for our trip, and now I don't have time to get a copy of the above.

If anyone has the RCC Pilotage Foundation Guide, Atlantic Spain and Portugal I'd be most grateful for a copy of the relevant pages, I will buy a copy on my return from the trip.

Please contact me via my boat web site: Dolcetto

[Update] The problem I have is that the information I have in my Pilot Book conflicts with the info in the Straits Sailing Handbook. If you compare these documents, you can see that the nett flow is often in a different direction!

Re: Strait of Gibraltar: East to West

You are talking with yourself?

I have made that passage several times. It can be a complicated one but there is not much to know.

Take a look:

The current is always from West to East and it its stronger with the tide going full (about 2 hours before High tide) and slower when the low tide is stronger (about 2 hours before low tide). You should go really near the European shore where the current is a lot less stronger. You should no attempt to make it with a strong West wind.

Once I had to do that against a 30K West wind and it was not nice it took a looooooong time and was very uncomfortable.

If you can go with a East wind. Gibraltar is a nice place to stay if you see that the west wind is to strong. There is normally a lot more wind on the Gibraltar strait and in its vicinity than out of it.

Have a nice sail. There is nothing to be afraid off. If the conditions are too rough with West wind, just turn around and look for shelter in Gibraltar.

Regards

Paulo
