barbour (barber) pole

Can somebody please tell me what a barbour (barber) pole is? Not sure if it is another name for a whisker pole. Cheers

Re: barbour (barber) pole

A barber pole is that candy cane striped cylinder found in front of barber shops.
Barber haulers adjust the spinnaker/jib sheeting angle by pulling the sheet/sail inboard,
and usually consist of a snatch block and line.
Hope this helps.

Re: barbour (barber) pole

Are you thinking 'barber-haul'? it's a method of laterally moving the jib leads inboard or outboard with dedicated tackle.

Not sure I've heard of a Barber pole other than the sidewalk variety.

Re: barbour (barber) pole

Me neither. a pole that holds the jib clew out is called a whisker pole. Scott and Flyby are right about what a barber-haul does to either jib or spinny sheet.

Wasn't sure of the terminology but makes sense with the set up I had seen last weekend. Still ignorant of the complete set up though. Cheers all.

Re: barbour (barber) pole

I have seen some boats with their barber hauls connected to a short pole to keep the sail away from the boat. It is on the opposite side of the whisker pole. Can this be the barber pole?
