Wooden sailboat suggestions please

Hi all.

This is purely hypothetical and purely fiction. Those of you who know me know my wife is a published fiction writer. One of her friends emailed her and asked for my help. The friend is writing a "romance novel" (ewww!) and in it the lady meets the boy, learns to sail, learns to race and wins the club year end, one race, PHRF (or whatever handicapping system you suggest). And they all live happily ever after.

So - she wants me to tell her what kind of sailboat this lady and her boyfriend win the race in??? She wants a wooden boat, with an motor, that two can handle, that can win a handicap club race. (See - I told you it was fiction).

She thought a "26-foot Penobscot Boat Works Lubec Sloop" would be nice. (what does she or I know about those????)

So, you arm chair quarterbacks, you wanna be Stephen Kings, you dreamers you, what do I tell her the boat should be? (links with pictures would really help)

(And be nice - I offered to help because I HATE fiction about sailing that is not accurate. Who in the right mind takes OFF their pfd and dives into the water to save someone and drowns - aka "Message in a Bottle")

Many thanks

Rik

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

Where is the story set?
The appropriate boat for the Maritimes (an early Mahone bay bluenose) would be completely inaccurate for San Francisco Bay or Long Island.

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

Thanks to Jones - see - I knew I was forgetting stuff to ask her. Here is what she responded (remember - FICTION!!!!!)

1 - An outboard motor would be preferable. And it is an old boat that she has to refurbish, something fairly economical since her 17 yr old brother was able to buy it by saving every dime for a couple years. In the actual regatta, I have my team coming in 1st and celebrating the win. I realize now that’s not how it would be since they have to figure handicaps and such. I would still like them to come in first though. I’m not sure if this would affect the type of boat.

2 - I have asked her where The adventure is set. Hold your replies until I hear from her please.

Thanks

Rik

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

Thanks again Jones - and the answer is:

"It’s in southern Indiana on the Ohio River. The regatta is right there on the river. I know Louisville does one near there every year. '

OK - Now what do I suggest to her?

Rik

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

What if she goes smaller, and the happy couple wins some type of dinghy race? The actual design of the dinghy is probably less important.

Or perhaps finds an old derelict 1940's or 50's era wooden dragon class? She is starting her novel in an Olympic year after all, and those were olympic racers from the late 40's through the early 70's.

Thanks dmc

I like the "Olympic year idea. For some reason she is wanting a motor on it. I suggested a Snipe.

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

hehe... tell her she need to write the story WE want, not the one she wants.

A "romance" novel about one man's love of racing, and bringing back a 1956 thoroughbred for one last hurrah around the bouys. Actually, I think we call those blogs these days....

Re: Wooden sailboat suggestions please

how bout a nice restored wooden Folkboat?

Untitled Document

Pretty, been around a long time, can be found cheap if you're willing to put the work in, good sailors. I think some have no engines (some do) so an outboard on a bracket would be realistic.

Is this book set in the present? Then it's going to have to be a restored boat of some sort. The Ohio river? Don't tell them wood does poorly in fresh water, it could spoil the "romance".
