Mariner 38, 36, 39 [NH] INFO wanted

We are looking at a 38 Mariner [New Hampshire build] and cannot find any info. Can anyone help?

We have been told that the 38 is a stretched out 36 and a shortened 39 [Ha]. We are interested in - overall build quality of these boats, deck rot issues, blister issues, blue water ability [want to coastal cruise and maybe go around the world], size OK for single handing when needed? Things to look for when surveying 30 year old Mariners, Motion/comfort at sea, crazing gelcoat issues, Universal model 40 [with 4,000+ hrs], V-drive transmission reliability, sailing characteristics [in light airs and heavy seas], any trouble with offset unprotected prop [hitting things, lines, nets, etc] and specific problems/benefits with the long [not deep] fin keel [we have been mostly looking at full keel boats]. And any other helpful info.

Thank you very much for your help.

Don't know if you are still interested. I own a Mariner 28 and love it. Try

Mariners were built to a very high quality, but relatively few were built, so there is not a huge fan base as for some other boats. Every owner I have met loves them, and any sailor who knows the boat has been complimentary, that is I have never heard anything bad about the NH boats.
There are or were several websites hosted by folks cruising on Mariners, careful searching should turn them up.
In a nut shell, Mariner was started in 78 and was selling a fair number of boats. In the early 80's they got a large order from a bare boat charter company (the 39 I believe). After purchasing the material to build the charter boats the order fell through, causing cash flow problems and bankruptcy. The boats were well built with good quality fittings. I have not heard any stories of soft decks or hull blisters, and all of these are 30+years old. Again sample size is pretty small.
Good Luck.

I have a 1980 Mariner 36, which I sail in the San Francisco Bay and down the coast. A great boat, well-built and a nice ride even in 18 – 20 Kt. winds. The engine is original, and I don't know the hours but if it goes I will replace it. If you are nearby let me know, I can show you the boat. The Mariner Forum is the place to go for more info. If you find one check the cabin top and the chain plates for water damage. That’s the only thing negative I have seen about the boat. Drop we a line at, if you need more info. Good Luck.
