RIP Michael Calabrese

Some of you may remember the guy who tried to ride out Hurricane Irene off Willoughby Spit in Norfolk.

It didn't end well with the boat blown ashore and later burned up in a mysterious fire while still sitting on the beach.

Looks like he's been found drowned at a marina on the ICW about 30 miles south of Norfolk.

Whatever you thought of the guy, he sure seemed to be a magnet for trouble....

This is sad. Totally unsurprising, but sad.

Re: RIP Michael Calabrese

Isn't that a Santa Cruz 50'?
Awful expensive investment to try out on a hurricane. Now he's staying at a mission? Where did the money come from for such a big boat? What? now someone burns it... Good grief, now he's found dead...
Maybe it's just suspicious old me but I'd say something sure stinks in Denmark.

I believe it was a Hunter. This is really a tragedy and I am saddened regardless of the history.

Re: RIP Michael Calabrese

It was a Hunter. I think it cost them in the low 100k and was pretty much their entire life savings in the boat.

49 is a pretty young age to die at. History of alcoholism so I wonder if he got drunk and fell off the dock. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

Re: RIP Michael Calabrese

Holy crap what a sad shame. Think of him what you will..

I'd have been much happier hearing he turned things around, and was sailing off into the sunset.

I might have thought the rescue was silly and all, but figured this was a good chance for him to turn things around.

Just sad.

Re: RIP Michael Calabrese

Well, RIP anyway, despite of the stoopid stuff he did. Very sad way to go.
