Shark

While sailing outside of Newport Harbor Calif We spotted this shark next to our boat. It kind of looks like a baby White Shark but I am no expert. It was about 300 yards from shore near the edge of the kelp.

Re: Shark

Impossible to tell from that pic. Next time, grab it by the tail and hold it out of the water when you take its portrait .

EDIT:
It could be a salmon shark, Lamna ditropis. They're in the same taxonomic family as white sharks, and look more or less like a miniature version of them.

Re: Shark

I sail up the coast in Channel Islands and have see what I thought was a great white until my wife said more likely a maco shark, we will never know but good pick, and yes they do live here. My dock mate spotted one "about half a boat leanth" (his boat is 41 footer) in the channel between Santa Cruse and Annacapa Island.

Re: Shark

Sweet, most likely a small mako, what's the bait fish action up there like right now ? Water down here is running around 60-64 degs, he maybe chasing macks or the likes.

A buddy hooked one up on his way back from Catalina, scared the crap out of him

Re: Shark

There are large schools of anchovies that we see the birds dive bombing on almost every time we are out there. Often there are huge pods of dolphins. I now this time of year the sharks come close to shore to birth their young. It was in July 2010 that a swimmer training for a triathlon was killed by shark most likely a great white 150 yards off the shore at Fletcher cove near Solana Beach.

Based on the elongated fin and lack of an obvious tail, your photo looks like a Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish) - a very cool fish to see!- more than a shark. Unless you saw more of the fish than what's in the photo.

Re: Shark

It could be a Mola. It could be a lot of things. As I said above, it's really impossible to tell from that pic. I tossed out the suggestion that it might be a salmon shark based on aquestforfun's description of it as a "baby great white shark", and because it looks a bit like a shark with the tail flexed to one side. But, there are lots of sharks and other big fish in the ocean. Without a clear pic, or even better a movie, even a card-carrying Marine Biologist (such as Yours Truly) couldn't make much more than a wild guess.
