Re: Computer Expert Help

hard drive probably crapped out on you, not a virus. Was it dropped?

There's your problem right there. Get your 3.5s out of the CD-ROM drive. I know you really like Lotus 123 and CorelWrite, but come on, it's 2012 for pete's sake.

Re: Computer Expert Help

The symptoms don't sound like a virus. As was said, I think you have a failing disk drive. It can be replaced, usually a fairly simple operation.

Re: Computer Expert Help

Probably not worth the effort if the HD is toast, and it does sound like it is. Brian, ffs, go buy a new one. You USAian bustards pay half what we do for new machines and here you are whining about a dead second hand pile of junk and whether it is worth your while to spend a couple of days trying to reinstall the operating system.

Floppies in bloody deed. I join Jones in shaking my head in dismay.

Now BBQBoy , I'll leave it to others to tell you to

- Buy a Mac

- Go Linux

Re: Computer Expert Help

I would expect that the recovery disks would overwrite the MBR as well. While it is in theory possible to flash a BIOS (the "core programming") with malware, or "go hide somewhere" else, I don't know of any current viruses that do that -- though to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that stuxnet or one of its relatives does.

I agree with other posters that you might just have a dead drive.

Re: Computer Expert Help

Viruses can mimic a bad hard drive. Let's face it, viruses can do anything other programs can do.

In the future, I would try System Restore, which is a built in part of XP and Win 7. I've had that take me to a time before the virus got going, at which point even if it is present, it is easier to eradicate.

Alternatively, try starting up in Safe Mode and running a free program called Malwarebytes, which is good at snuffing out some of the really well hidden ones.
