VHF MMSI Number

If I input a MMSI number into my VHF, does my ship information register on the receiving ends transciever every time I transmit, or only when I push the emergency button?

Re: VHF MMSI Number

It only reveals info if you are doing a DSC call to another station. Routine ship to ship is the same.

Yep, xy has it right. Your info will also be transmitted if someone uses DSC for a position report on you.

Re: VHF MMSI Number

My understanding is that the only thing that transmits with a DSC call is your own MMSI number. Is that correct?

I know that vessels with AIS transponders can send out vessel name, speed, course, etc. (my AIS receiver picks up this info), but that's a separate system from DSC.

In theory, there should be a database that could be used to query an MMSI number and receive back information on the vessel and its owner and emergency contacts - all the information that you enter into the system when you register for your MMSI. I have always assumed that the USCG would do just that when receiving a distress call via DSC, in fact, I would expect that they have an automated system that pops up that information for every DSC call they pick up on their monitoring. But that's just an assumption, and we know how dangerous assumptions can be.

Here's a good question for everyone: Is there a publicly accessible database where ordinary users can enter an MMSI and get back information on vessel and owner? I am referring specifically to US non-license MMSI numbers - the kind that you get for free through boatus.com, not the international type maintained by ITU that you have to pay the FCC for.

That only works for radios with FCC licenses, not for the free MMSI registrations that BoatUS assigns.

Did not realize it did not cover those free numbers.

What do you expect for free?

That's a great deal! Usually you have to pay extra for an unlisted number.

Re: VHF MMSI Number

I still a little confused by the MMSI #. Say I place a normal call on CH 16 to the coast guard. Can they obtain my ships information in some way if the MMSI number is programmed into my VHF? Currently I have a DSC radio but have not programmed the MMSI number in. Just curious if their is a problem on board and someone not familar with the radio starts calling Mayday, can the CG get the boat information or does the person using my radio need to press the emergency button on my radio for CG to get the MMSI number.

One thing I messed up is that I have a SSB radio on board. Did not realize when I got the SSB license it also came with a MMSI #. I had bought a Horizon hand held DSC radio with GPS, but went to the Boat US site to get a MMSI #. Now understand this radio is no good out side of US or in international waters (unless I send the radio back to factory to clear the MMSI # I programmed in)- that system seems a little messed up to me- adds a lot of confusion to the whole system.
