Race crew?

How would I find out if there are any regular weekly races around here? I'd like to try to get on with somebody if possible, but can't find anything. I know there's some a couple hours up the road, but would like to find something closer if possible.

Any tips on how to get on board as crew?

Re: Race crew?

1) find nearest yacht club
2) buy beer at nearest yacht club
3) ask about racing

Re: Race crew?

Yes it is usually the yacht clubs that are organizing the racing. Our club has a "crew circle" at the top of the ramp where people looking for rides stand. I am sure other clubs have similar systems. You could also contact the Fleet Captains of nearby clubs to find out their racing schedule. He or she would also know which boats might be looking for crew.

Re: Race crew?

Try contacting the West Florida Yacht Racing Association or one of its member Clubs...

Re: Race crew?

Our club has a "no one left on the dock who wants to go sailing" policy, though Connecticut is a bit of a hike from Ft. Myers. Just asking around has landed me berths in Chicago and HyŤres. Stumble's idea sounds like it should work too.

Re: Race crew?

In years of stomping around yacht clubs I have only been asked to leave one (new York yacht club), and have never been unable to find a boat to sail on (including new York). Though I don't know what type of racing is local, even if the club you walk into doesn't race, they will defiantly know who locally does.

Re: Race crew?

I just got done joining a YC. Needed 3 signatures and I didn't know anyone. But, I took a chance walking onto the "private grounds", started talking to some guys, got their sigs, joined, and am now being asked by several people to crew for them. I'd recommend doing the same. If they kick you out, then you probably don't want to join anyways.

Re: Race crew?

Post on the crew wanted section of sailing anarchy website. Worked for me. Also if your boat is at a marina, ask around about who races regularly and leave a note on their boat with your #. Also worked for me. Calling the dockmaster might help too if you are not a member of any marina/yachtclub.

Other than on light days, it is pretty rare to find a boat that couldn't use another crew member. If you show up on a race night (usually tues wed or thurs depending on the club) and just ask around you could almost certainly find a boat.
