Re: Videos : Sailing Vancouver Islands West Coast

So we're anchored in the most beautiful spot we've ever seen, bar none. I don't even want to name it for fear it will become the destination spot in Barkley Sound, but being a nice guy I will. Dodger Channel between Diana and Haines Islands. Not far from Bamfield and Cape Beale. Wow, that is all.
So here's a question, which weather service do you believe if NOAA is forecasting west winds in Juan de Fuca all week but Environment Canada is calling for strong SE winds beginning Wed? We're thinking about heading for Sooke on Tuesday just in case EC is right.
Pics from Dodger Channel, they don't do it justice. White sandy beaches and incredible tide pools in the rocks.

Wow

I would not thought of anchoring there. Sailing directions has a "local knowledge" notation.

My chart does not indicate the bottom. What came up on the anchor? Did it set well?

Have you checked the weather fax to get the big picture?

Northeast Pacific WX Briefing Package

It shows a stationary high on the 24 hour forecast and nasty developing low (998) on the 96 hour forecast. That would produce SE winds, not nice in Juan de Fuca.

Do you have a grib reader like ugrib? I have some faith in them on the west side. I also use gribs and weatherfax to do Maui - PNW.

The grib files showing a weakening low. But Tuesday looks good to get down JDF with a following breeze.

Beautiful shots, John...

Weather... my weather guru friend swears by NOAA over EC most any day.. but the kicker is that we plan to ride EC's forecast easterlies to Jedidiah Island Wednesday so odds are high that we will see NOAA's westerly winds...

We're hoping EC has it right this time.. but.....

Re: Videos : Sailing Vancouver Islands West Coast

We anchored in Dodger channel when we went around in 2009. If you're looking for another good anchorage, check out Wood's Nose in Port San Juan (we anchored there next). Here's a link to a video we made up the north end:

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Cheers.

Re: Videos : Sailing Vancouver Islands West Coast

Thanks for the link Jack, that helps a lot. I think we'll scoot outa here on Tuesday. The anchor set well (once I got it down, having windlass trouble as well as transmission problems). The channel is straightforward with 3-7 fathoms through the middle. If you stay in the channel there is only one rock that wasn't charted but it was pretty obvious, and close to Haines Is. I wouldn't want to be here if there were strong winds predicted from the NW or W, but it's a beautiful spot (and they're catching some nice kings right around the corner).
Fast- Jedidiah, that's on the list for this year. Hope NOAA is wrong for you.

Dylan, Here's a quick closeup vid of my hokey tiller pilot setup, no, this is not a permanent solution but I thought since you where interested, you might get some ideas from what I have going so far. Hopefully someday i'll get a real good setup for it, but you know how that goes...

Also, I have a few more videos up, I'll likely add links to the first post later, but for now you can check out my channel if you want to see them...

The "recap" videos are us re-hashing and talking about stuff, not as much actual sailing stuff....

Re: Videos : Sailing Vancouver Islands West Coast

I forgot to mention that when we left Barkley for Sooke it was during ebb, which Dreamspeaker guide said would give us a southerly current to ride. We didn't find it and had about one knot against us until we got to around Port San Juan when it started to flood and then we enjoyed a nice push. We were able to sail most of the way, except during lulls in the NW wind, lots of wing on wing. The next day from Sooke home we had strong gusty NW winds which made for some interesting sailing through Race Passage and across Hein Bank where the ebb current was hitting the wind hard.

Re: Videos : Sailing Vancouver Islands West Coast

We got our SE winds, John, and sunshine for a day.. after that it was probably the wettest trip in recent memory, and unfortunately the SE winds hung around for our return to Vancouver..

However we still had a 19 boat raft up in Smuggler Cove for the weekend!

Flying off to Nova Scotia Thursday for a couple of weeks. See you in Comox??
