Katie L under power - eight outboards in eight hours

I loaned my boat to a UK sailing magazine

I launched it at our local 40 acre lake and we tested eight different outboards on it.

Great fun and really useful for me before deciding which one to buy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0afiWy2y-Uc

this is the back of the boat just in case anyone is interested in the hull form

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO5e8xA5x9Q

seven of the outboards were long shaft

Honda sent a short shaft - it produced a lot more visible cavitation but did amazingly well given that it was not sticking clear of the hull and was working in the tunnel

I reckon I could get seven knots or more out of the hull if I had enough power

but it will slip along at five all day - which is wonderful

It makes me optimistic that I can spend most of the time using the little Honda 2.3 which will be protected from my proclivity for grounding the boat as I creep up the creeks

and while on outboards

dig this

Briggs and stratton outboard

great little film

Dylan

to my mind there was one that was head and shoulders above the others

for low noise, good thrust, smooth running, high top speed, low fuel consumption and electrical output

sadly I cannot tell you until the mag is published on June 21st which one I should like to own or blag

should I disclose this information to you then I would feel obliged to slaughter one of Maggy's puppies

the seven are currently named after yacht designers - Bolger, Maurice, Van etc etc

sadly Welsford copped it day four - squished by his mother

Nice work Dylan on the outboard video for PBO. PBO sounds like the equivalent organization we have here across the pond Practical (Piratical) Sailor which does independent testing of many boat products.

I'm curious about the Hunter Mistral as I can't find much info about it on the web. Is it a bilge keeler (2 smaller keels) or a center board model? I assume it is made by the American boat builder Hunter Marine? Is that a model only sold across the pond? Perhaps it is merely listed by it's length, which is? Sorry if I missed if/when you discussed these details before.
How's the Slug faring? Is she happy with her new owner?

Carry on.

the Minstrel is 23 foot long - sister ship to cat rigged Liberty

Home Page - Hunter Liberty & Minstrel Owners Association

it has two small stub bilge keels and a centre plate

I bought it because it has an outboard well

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO5e8xA5x9Q

and a prop tunnel like a life boat

not sure about trhe connection between English and American Hunters

Welcome to the Hunter Association

I have yet to test the boat in the rough stuff but so far it seems pretty good under power and sail

Re: Katie L under power - eight outboards in eight hours

British and US Hunter's are different companies. US Hunters are sold in the UK as Legend or Hunter Legend. British Hunter made smaller, high quality, seaworthy boats and are now out of business although someone bought the molds and rights and I think you can still get one built to order.

Re: Katie L under power - eight outboards in eight hours

I just read that one of the British Hunter 19' sailboats crossed the pond. Tough little boat.
The rig of the Liberty cat boats is unusual.
Thanks for the links Dylan and Geoff for confirming the difference between the US and UK Hunters.
