Re: Darkside My A$$

I have never owned one but I love sailing rented hobie cats on vacation. I have done it in Key West and the Yucatan. Fun, fun, fun and easy to sail. And the ladies like it to because they can sun themselves on the "big hamock." And I havn't turtled one, but I've tipped them before and if you angle it the right way and allow the wind to help you its not too hard to right. But I am working with 220 lbs just by myself. Sailing doesn't have to be pretty to be fun, and your new baby fits the bill.

Re: Darkside My A$$

Funny, this looks like one I saw for sail a few days ago when I was doing a bit of window shopping on the net - somewhere in South Texas. Did you just buy this, or are you selling it? I'm currious to hear how it goes. Just starting to learn to sail, and the ultimate goal is a cat in the low to mid 40's for some serious bluewater cruising. I've a long way to go and years of experience before I get there.

Have fun, Smacky!

P.S. - Loved the post about Drake's rescue of Cha Cha. Well done!

Yeah, one, probably the same boat. It was on Craigslist. Pulled the thing apart and started sanding on the really crappy FG patch work that had been done on the hulls. They're in pretty good shape for being almost 40 years old. Also started painting the castings.

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

Dude, I have no clue. Whatever it is, I'll bury that sucker. (Then pitchpole straight to the ER I'm sure.)

Somebody have an old trapeze rig they want to give me? You can be an official sponsor of "Team SmackCatty".

Re: Darkside My A$$

I'm tempted to pick one up myself, I've rented a couple, never flipped one, but got close a couple of times. Turn downwind to ease off not up wind like a mono....The only downside is I almost pitchpoled when the waves were breaking over the bows instead of under. Easing the sheet, until the bows popped back up, and moving everyone toward the stern fixed it.

If you keep the sheet in hand, I don't see how you would flip it not on purpose. Also if you do flip it is much easier to right with the sheet out. The guy I rented from suggested unclipping the main clew so it wouldn't catch on anything.

I believe the terminology is - a cat has two hulls, a tri has one hull and two amas and a proa has a hull and an outrigger.

I, myself, personally intend to continue being outspoken and opinionated, intolerant of all fanatics, fools and ignoramuses, deeply suspicious of all those who have "found the answer" and on my bad days, downright rude.

Re: Darkside My A$$
