how to remove boat numbers from sail?

When I bought this sail recently it had boat numbers on it from the previous boat. I did a quick check and it seemed I could grab a corner pretty easily and it came off cleanly. Now when I am trying to really do it the black from the number comes off leaving a tan goop. (Adhesive). Best way to get rid of these numbers????

Try peanut butter first. Seriously. Rub it on, leave it a half hour or so, then wipe off. You'll know if it needs more time or if it is not working and you need to step up to serious stuff quickly.
Read this somewhere on the Internet and found it better than goof off and such for most problems.
Tastes better too.

1) My source is North Sails.
2) I've done post grad work in Organic Chemistry. Acetone does not attack polyester or nylon.

Re: how to remove boat numbers from sail?

The adhesive used for vinyl and insignia-cloth numbers is easily and safely removed from sail material by using - GooGone™. Its the standard way for sailmakers to remove these adhesives.
Acetone, etc. greatly dissolves the adhesives and carries what was once a surface adhesive into the weave of the dacron ... which later discolors deep within the fabric. GooGone™ allows the adhesive to soften slowly and then the adhesive can easily be scraped (mostly) from the surface and with minimal penetration into the fabric weave.
