Johnson 8.0 Alt/Gen Hookup?

I just bought an older Johnson Sailmaster with 12v power...is it really as simple as hooking the red to postive and the black to negative on the battery studs? Should I have a inline fuse or switch so I only charge when it's needed? Or is all that stuff built into the motor?

I have a real nice deep cycle I don't want to fry.

Its all that I had on my sailmaster 6. It wont charge a batt from dead flat, but it'll keep it topped off nice.

Cool, thanks...I'm taking the wife and boy on a week long sailing trip. It would be nice to have lights and VHF all week.
